Debt problems are not new to millions of unfortunate Americans. With the economy tanking the way it has the past few years, people are finding themselves upside down in their mortgages, using one credit card to pay for another, and using credit cards for everyday expenses. Do You Have A Debt Problem?

The first step is to take a look at your situation, a very honest look. Some say that if you are unable to pay off your credit cards right now, today, you have a problem. This may be true. It seems highly doubtful that many are in a position to do so however.  A more realistic bench mark may be if you find yourself only able to pay the minimums on your balances, and find that the balances are not going down, and in fact are going up, you probably have a viable concern. Are you using one card to pay the minimums on another? This is another very bad sign.

Stop Adding To Your Debt. Now. Today!

Get rid of the cards. You simply will not be able to get out of debt if the lure of the plastic is too strong. This most likely will require a lifestyle change. But there really is no other way.

Figure Out A Way To Pay More Towards The Balances Each Month

Really try to come up with extra funds to put towards the balances. If you can find a chunk that you can put towards payments each month, you have a great chance of making a debt snowball work. This is a technique where you short circuit high interest rates and never decreasing balances. It is a proven method that has worked for many to eliminate their debt problems.

Take A Look At Debt Settlement

Debt settlement is basically calling your creditors and offering them a deal to only pay part of what you owe. Settlement works if you are behind on payments and have nerves of steel, can put up with phone calls during the day, and don’t mind a mark on your credit report. Settlement can and has worked for many people.

Debt Problems Will Not Go Away On Their Own

No matter how much worrying and wishing you do about your debt problems; they will not magically disappear overnight! It probably has taken a few years to get really deep into a huge debt situation, and it may take that long to get out. But you have to take action sooner than later if your life is in turmoil because of debt problems
